I’m portraying CEO Joe Takagi and singing 1960s Japanese pop hit “Sukiyaki” in the Hollywood Jane Revue’s Die Hard parody show!
In the film, Nakatomi Corporation’s chief executive Mr. Takagi is played by Hawaiian heartthrob James Shigeta — one of Hollywood’s only Asian leading men of the 20th century.
In 1963, Kyu Sakamoto’s song “Ue O Muite Arukou” — called “Sukiyaki” in the U.S. — topped the Billboard Hot 100. It remains one of the only non-English language songs to do so.
The song and Shigeta’s career mark a time when Asian people and culture began to have more visibility in the United States.
Doors open at 6pm; show starts 7pm. I open the show, so make sure to arrive early! 21+.
