My burlesque prop will compete at the LA County Fair!

I entered the giant yarn ball I made for my Cat Scratch Fever act in the Quilting division of this year's Los Angeles County Fair. Inspired by Claes Oldenburg's colossal soft sculptures of pie slices and other ordinary items, the ball is hand-quilted of fun fur in 3D around a weather balloon core.

Using a sharp needle right next to a thin-skinned balloon was a delicate matter! The precision the task required, coupled with the ball's shaggy hair and size, made it seem like doing surgery on some potbellied beast.

As you can see, it's not quite done yet, but it's making progress - which is good, since it has to be dropped off at the fairgrounds this Saturday for judging! The yarn ball will be on display August 30th - September 29th at the 2013 LA County Fair. Check out the fair's schedule of awesome events like monster trucks and motocross, and watch this space to see if my burlesque prop wins any fabulous prizes.
